The Eastern League had two teams competing in the 2022 CIF – Los Angeles Section Championships over the weekend at Cal State Northridge. First up was the Garfield Bulldogs, ranked 13th, in D2 – who had to win a play-in contest against the Grant Lancers and crushed them 19-0. Then won three upsets in #4 King Drew 10-9, #5 Arleta 9-3 and scored 11 runs in the 6th inning to take down #1 Port of Los Angeles 15-5. Sophomore infielder Brianna Hernandez crushed a three-run homer deep to left field in the second inning to give them a 3-1 advantage. But the two time defending champs and No. 3 seed Gardena Panthers wasn’t going away easily, scoring solo runs in the third and fourth innings to tie it at 3. Freshman Nadia Carrillo delivered a two-out, two-run double to left in the 5th inning to help Garfield prevail 5-3 to win their 1st CIFLACS Championship – since no-hitting Verdugo Hills at Easton Stadium on the campus of UCLA in 1995.
Junior Sophia Priebe pitched a complete game for the Lady Bulldogs.
