WILMINGTON — Banning’s Sarahy Martinez had a plan when she stepped into the batter’s box with the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning of Thursday’s Marine League softball clash with San Pedro.
“I wanted to hit the ball to the right side,” Martinez said. “All we needed to do was score a run, and it’s all I wanted to do.”
Martinez lined pitcher Vanessa Reed’s offering for a hit to right-center field, driving in the run that let Banning defeat San Pedro 4-3 at the Wilmington Sports Complex.
“I knew (Reed) would throw me an outside pitch, and I just had to push it over,” Martinez said.
Reed retired the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth before San Pedro’s defense broke down. Angela Zepeda and Meya Vargas reached on consecutive errors, giving Martinez the chance to end the game.
“Our motto (Thursday) was don’t give up, and this win was vital,” Martinez said. “It was something we talked about before the game.”
Angelina Devoe is a Junior Pitcher and is commited to play at the University of Central Florida.
