CSUN Edges Oregon State, 4-3 in Final Game of Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — The CSUN softball team (3-9) ended its time at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a victory over the Oregon State Beavers (7-8) by a score of 4-3 at Big League Dreams Sports Parks Saturday afternoon.
Isabella Hiner led the way with two RBIs, while Madison Okano and Amber Rivas each drove in runs as well. Malia Williams earned the win by going five innings, striking out four while only allowing three runs. Kaitlyn Tso earned her second save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors wasted no time getting the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Okano singled up the middle to start the inning. Isabella Valdez then reached on a bunt single, getting two runners on for Raegan Jackson, who grounded out but advancing both runners. Rivas then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Okano, giving CSUN the early 1-0 lead. Hiner followed with a single up the middle, scoring Valdez scored as CSUN doubled its lead to 2-0.
Williams only allowed two hits through the next three innings. In the top of the fifth though, the Beavers fought back. After a single to start the inning, Jaeya Butler homered to left-center, tying the game at two.
However, CSUN wasted no time getting one back. Valdez doubled to left center to lead off the bottom half of the fifth. Jackson then singled to left to put two runners on. Hiner reached on an error and Valdez scored, giving CSUN a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Oregon State countered and tied the game once again with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the sixth, Madilyn Hernandez singled up the middle to begin the rally. Sheridan Gonzalez pitch ran for Hernandez and advanced to second a ground out. Okano then singled to the shortstop and Gonzalez scored, giving CSUN the advantage with the Matadors needing three defensive outs to secure the victory.
And secure the victory they did. Tso entered the circle and struck out two out of four batters she faced to give CSUN the win.

Okano set the tone early like she did all weekend and Malia [Williams] and Kaitlyn [Tso] were tough as nails in the circle.
